What is Meth Addiction?

Methamphetamine, or meth, is a highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system. Its intense high quickly leads to dependency, with users needing more to achieve the same effects. This can create a dangerous cycle of compulsive use.

Meth addiction causes severe physical and mental damage, including weight loss, poor hygiene, dental issues, paranoia, hallucinations and more. Methamphetamine Types Comparison

Methamphetamine Types and Characteristics

Type Street Names Appearance How It’s Used Potency
Crystal Meth Ice, Glass, Crystal Clear or bluish-white crystals Smoked, injected, snorted Extremely potent
Powdered Meth Speed, Crank, Uppers White, off-white, or yellowish powder Snorted, swallowed, injected Moderate potency
Base Meth Base, Paste, Point Sticky, damp, oily (white/yellow/brown) Smoked, injected More potent than powder, less than crystal
P2P Meth Biker Meth, Shake & Bake Meth Clear crystals or powder, often homemade Smoked, injected, snorted Highly dangerous, often cut with toxic chemicals

Understanding the Differences

  • Crystal Meth: The purest and most addictive form—rapid onset and long-lasting effects.
  • Powdered Meth: Easier to disguise or combine with other substances, often less potent.
  • Base Meth: Rare and highly addictive; often found in limited geographic regions.
  • P2P Meth: Illegally synthesized using dangerous methods—linked to increased health risks and overdose.

Meth Withdrawal and the “Crash”: What to Expect

When someone stops using meth, the body and brain have to adjust. This early phase is often called the “crash.” It can feel intense, even if it isn’t always medically dangerous in the same way alcohol or benzo withdrawal can be.

Many people feel:

  • Extreme tiredness and sleeping a lot

  • Low mood, depression, or feeling numb

  • Strong cravings

  • Anxiety, irritability, or agitation

  • Trouble focusing

  • Increased appetite

For some people, depression can get severe. If someone feels hopeless or has thoughts of self-harm, they should get help right away. A supported setting matters because the risk of relapse is often highest in the first days—not because someone is weak, but because the brain is craving relief. If you’re not sure what level of support you need, start with medically supervised care and step into the next level of treatment from there.

What Works in Meth Addiction Treatment (Evidence-Based Care)

Meth addiction treatment works best when it combines structure, therapy, and support over time. There isn’t one single “fix.” Most people do better with a plan that helps them:

  • Understand triggers

  • Build coping skills for cravings and stress

  • Improve mood and sleep

  • Stay connected to support after rehab

Treatment for meth is often behavior-based, which means therapy and daily routines are a big part of recovery.

Behavioral Therapies That Treat Meth Use Disorder

Many people use meth to escape pain, exhaustion, trauma, or mental health symptoms. Therapy helps you treat the “why,” not only the drug use.

Common evidence-based approaches include:

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): helps you spot thought patterns that lead to use and replace them with healthier choices

  • DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): builds skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and impulse control

  • Trauma-informed therapy: helps people heal without being forced to relive trauma

  • Relapse prevention planning: builds a real plan for triggers, cravings, and high-risk moments

At Ladoga Recovery Center, we are committed to providing compassionate, effective therapy services for all. We support individuals at every stage of their recovery journey– regardless of one’s socioeconomic status.

Are There Different Types of Meth?

Yes, methamphetamine comes in many forms depending on its potency and how it is intended to be ingested. Crystal meth, also known as “glass” appears as clear, crystalline chunks or shards. It’s usually smoked or sometimes injected, and it’s one of the most potent forms of methamphetamine. “Whereas glass comes in shards, “crank” is often found in powder form. It can be snorted, swallowed, or injected, and is generally considered less pure than crystal meth, making it less potent and less refined. Meth can also be presented as a thick, waxy substance known as a “base,” or can be manufactured into pills or even liquid form. Although meth can present itself in various states of appearance and potency, each form of this drug is above all else, harmful, addictive and potentially fatal.
